What makes crypto different

  • It can swing a lot. Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% from a peak several times. Smaller coins can lose nearly all their value.
  • No deposit insurance. Coins held on an exchange are not covered by the FDIC or SIPC the way bank deposits and brokerage accounts usually are.
  • No income. Unlike a stock’s dividends or a bond’s interest, most coins pay nothing; any return comes from someone paying more later.
  • Taxes. In the U.S., selling, swapping or spending crypto is usually a taxable sale, and gains are taxed like gains on stock.
  • Scams are common. Be wary of guaranteed returns, unsolicited “investment coaches” and pressure to move fast.

About this data

Prices, market values and the percentage changes in the table come from CoinMarketCap and are taken once a day, so they are a daily snapshot, not a live quote. The charts start on the day this page began tracking and gain a point every day. “Hours of work” divides a coin’s price by average hourly earnings of production and nonsupervisory workers (Bureau of Labor Statistics, before taxes), the same wage used across the site.
